Elemental

Lent 2021 • Mixed Media

I started this sketchbook as a 40-day project, in conjunction with prompts and creative gatherings I developed for this season. Written as we were waiting for vaccines to be delivered, for belly-to-belly hugs administered to friends and loved ones, this chronicles daily sketches and experiments to hold that period of longing. The title Elemenetal comes from the practice of Lent. In my tradition, you abstain from items to help quiet your heart, simplify down to the elemental aspects of life and spirituality. Because of the season of loss, I decided to focus my lenten journey on questions around the human experience: What does it feel like to lose sight? Where are the places that feel like home? What is it like to come home? Where are you currently craving connection? Where does your soul feel disconnected?

You can read the prompts I distributed in conjunction here.
