All in-person classes from Golden Repair are taught at Studio Mercia. It’s full of donated art supplies, so if there’s a medium you’ve always wanted to try, but don’t know where to start, this is the place for you! We have an encaustic table, frames, all paint mediums, drawing mediums, loads of textiles and fiber arts, plus an art book library.
The origins of Mercia
When we bought our house in 2020, we really bought it for the 3-car garage in the back with the 10-foot ceilings. We immediately saw the potential to create the artist space of our dreams: a working art studio and guest house for residencies. Over the last year, with the help of our incredible community, we finally made the transformation from garage to studio, as we were expecting our surprise first child. Unfortunately, tragedy struck us with our daughter passing in the womb a month before she was due, stillborn the day before Cole had testicular cancer surgery. To honor her memory, Beatrix Mercia Tesoro (Bringer of joy and mercy, our treasure) is now the namesake of our studio. While we she isn’t able to be with us in person, her name will always be in our mouths as we invite people into creativity—the legacy we hoped to give her.
Our dear friend and expert calligrapher, David Chang, honored us by writing her name and speaking her story over it. This video is incredibly emotional and we proudly display this tender and beautiful gift in the studio.
